Day 2: Full Day Mokoro Safari & Bushwalk – Okavango Delta

Wake up just after sunrise, with the crisp morning air and bushveld smells welcoming you to another exciting day. A fresh cup of coffee or tea and homemade biscuits await at the main deck area for you to enjoy with a scenic view of the Boteti River right in front of you. A delicious, packed breakfast will be served on-the-go, as you will have an early morning departure on your full day mokoro safari in the Okavango Delta.

This full day mokoro safari will take you deeper into the Okavango Delta and National Park where you will see a larger variety of fascinating wildlife such as elephant, antelope, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, hippos, and if you are lucky, wild dog.

Your Mokoro safari begins as you head out into the many reed channels of the Okavango Delta – a piece of Africa that plays to its own rules filled with many wonders and secret tales of wildlife. Today we venture through a wetland marvel, observing anything from water-loving elephants to mischievous antelope or fascinating aquatic life.

Your knowledgeable guide will be updated on any exciting or special sightings in the area before starting the water safari. Most guides are from the Bayei tribal people who many believe to be the first inhabitants of the Okavango Delta, “people of the Delta” so to speak.

You will learn about all aspects of this magical inland oasis from the tiniest of creatures, beautiful reed frogs and big 5 mammal species along the water edge. Your guide will also interpret nature to you in a unique manner and show you traditional and medicinal uses of wild plants in the Delta.

A stop will be made on one of the many islands scattered across the Delta to enjoy your packed lunch before heading on a nature walk to discover more of this abundant ecosystem. Walking along the waterways, you will witness different wildlife come together to enjoy the abundance of water – be it as a refreshment, a place to cool down, or an opportunity to have fun splashing about.

A guided bushwalk empowers travelers to roam freely as an undetected visitor of the natural terrain. With your trusted guide, you will become aware of all the signs of communication put forward by birds and mammals that will steer your pathway.

As the Okavango Delta is at its highest, the surrounding bushveld will be at its driest, pushing more wildlife towards the waterways – an opportunity for spectacular animal observation. Picnic snacks and refreshments are included.

After some nature observation and relaxation, you will continue your adventure exploring more of the unlimited channels with a choice visiting any other islands positioned along the way.

You are scheduled to return to the lodge around 16:00 PM. Unwind and refresh with some leisure time back at our tented lodge before a scrumptious dinner is served in perfect serenity.

Wake up just after sunrise, with the crisp morning air filling your lungs. A fresh cup of coffee or tea will give you a warm greeting as you make your way to the main deck area – sweetened by some home baked biscuits as you observe the scenic morning view.

Before departing on your full day safari game drive to Moremi/Khwai Reserves this early morning, a flavorful packed breakfast will be supplied to you. On your drive to Moremi/Khwai Reserve, you will be in a community reserve with ample opportunity for sighting of the Big 5 and other animals.

The Khwai private reserve, positioned between Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve (on the northern fringe of the Okavango Delta), is known for its pristine wilderness and abundance of wildlife.

Moremi is home to nearly 500 species of bird (from water birds to forest dwellers), and a vast array of other wildlife species, including buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, jackal, impala, red lechwe, and African Wild dog. The Moremi Game Reserve offers contrasting terrain, including Acacia forests, Foodplains, Mopane woodlands, papyrus rivers and magical lagoons – overall encompassing a large portion of the Delta’s wetlands.

You will journey in an open 4×4 game vehicle specially converted to empower travelers to indulge their senses when up close to wildlife. Your experienced game ranger will teach you about all interesting aspects of nature and interpret wildlife behavior to you in a unique and captivating way. The ranger will also receive updates from other rangers in the area, determining animal movements for best possible sightings.

This full day game drive is expected to begin around 06:00 AM and come to a satisfying end around 16:00 PM. Please note that return time could be delayed depending on the roads, time of year and sightings. Picnic snacks and refreshments are included.

You will enjoy a packed lunch, served in style by your guide as you come to a stop at one of the beautiful rest camps positioned along the way.

After you return to base camp, your long day on safari will conclude with drinks of your choice, served on the wooden deck overlooking the Boteti River with an eventful sunset bringing the day to a close as the coolness of the evening sets in.

Dinner will be served under the stars in the open Boma area, allowing guests to tune in to the sounds offered up by the Delta.

Malaria Information

The Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls areas are all high-risk malaria areas, with peak risk times during the warmer months (October to April). While we may not give direct recommendations on malaria prophylaxis, we urge you to speak to your doctor or medical professional for authorized medical advice on the matter.

Proper precautions and measures can however go a very long way, including:

  • A proper mosquito repellant – the easiest is in a spray form (e.g. Peaceful Sleep or Tabard)
  • A room mosquito spray (e.g. Peaceful Sleep or Doom) to keep the room mosquito free
  • Wearing light trousers and long sleeve shirts in the early morning or evening
  • Keeping you room / tent door closed to keep bugs outside.
  • We also recommend an “after bite” lotion or spray if you get bitten by a mosquito (not a malaria cure, but it takes away the itch!)
